We create environments in our residential aged care facilities where people living with dementia feel encouraged, and are appropriately supported, to participate in physical activity and exercise. Exercise can help us let off steam and it can often give us a heightened sense of wellbeing.
Our residents can then choose to participate in those activities that they enjoy, and in so doing, be able to interact with other people.
Our Lady of Consolation offers specialised person-centred care and support to people living with dementia, providing high care and low care secure facilities.
These GYM programs are run by Exercise Physiologists who have a special interest in working with people with dementia and encouraging them to participate.
OLOC Get Yourself Moving Programs also offers targeted restorative programs to people with dementia who would benefit by improving their physical function and who can participate in such a program. In this case the resident visits our GYM at least three times a week to participate in their program and access our facilities and equipment. They might also access hydrotherapy.
A targeted exercise program can improve a person’s balance, range of motion, strength or flexibility. At OLOC, we have demonstrated that dementia need not be a barrier to accessing such a program.
GYM Programs for people with dementia include:
- Daily exercise classes
- Daily brisk walks through our gardens
- Team active games like ballon tennis or soccer
- Active video gaming with the Xbox
